Elder & Sister Bennett's Experience

This is Elder and Sister Bennett, one of our senior missionary couples.  Last week we had a pretty scary experience.  Elder Bennett had an appendectomy that ended up being a lot more than that.  When they opened him up his appendix was actually wrapped around his intestines and they had to take out 1/4 of his intestines.  It is a miraculous story...The Bennetts were in Lopez, the furthest Zone from the Mission Home, when we were called with the words, "Elder Bennett has collapsed."  We were just back from visiting the two ERC (Employment Resource Center) senior sister missionaries because one of the sisters had collapsed when they were out walking.  She thought she was having a heart attack.  She had seen a local doctor that told her she was just dehydrated. (They forgot to take water on the walk and it was very hot & humid)  While we were in the mission office thinking about what to do with Elder Bennett, the ERC sisters called and said the other sister seemed to have had a mini stroke (TIA, I think it's called)  Meanwhile, Sister Bennett calls wondering if there was a way to air-vac her husband to Manila.  (There is a world renown hospital, St. Luke's Global in Manila)  We had a couple of our office elders pick up both of the ERC sisters to take them to Manila.  Meanwhile, we found out there were no emergency helicopters here and Elder Bennett was not getting much help at the Lopez hospital.  We told Sister Bennett to have the Ambulance take him to Lucena, about 1 1/2 or 2 hr. drive and we would meet her there.  We got there at the same time and Elder Bennett was thrashing around in great pain. (And he has a very high threshold for pain)  George gave him a blessing which calmed him down a little.  They got him in the emergency room, gave him something for pain and said they were going to do an ultrasound.  They put him in a room and we waited quite a while.  We asked why the delay and they said they were waiting to find someone who could do the ultrasound.  Finally, George & I looked at each other and said, "We've got to get him out of here and up to Manila, which was about a 3 hr. drive from there.  We called the AMA (Area Medical Advisor) and told him what we could about his symptoms...We knew it was either his appendix or his gall bladder.  The AMA supported our decision to put him in our van and drive him to Manila.  It was the perfect time because is was about 10:00 p.m. by then,  so there wouldn't be the busy traffic.  We made it to Manila in 1 1/2 hrs!  We know that the Lord guided our efforts and helped us arrive safely!  Sister Bennett's was so hyper and her blood pressure was sky high, so the doctor gave her a Valium and put her in a bed across the room from her husband.  That's where he had the operation.  The point is that he probably wouldn't have lived through it if he had been operated on at either of the other hospitals!  In Lopez, they told him he probably had indigestion and in Lucena, they couldn't get his ultrasound done...BECAUSE HE WAS SUPPOSED TO GO TO MANILA.  I am so thankful for the promptings of the Spirit!...So are the Bennetts!
